La Casa de los Bates, a former farmhouse of Santa Eladia, is currently a rural house authorized by the Junta de Andalucía. It consists of a main mansion in Italian style and extensive gardens and orchards of tropical trees (avocado, mango, persimmon, guava, banana, papaya). It has six exclusive rooms and 20,000 square meters of gardens, so our guests can enjoy a very intimate atmosphere throughout their stay.

This unique nineteenth century house, listed as Civil Heritage of the City of Motril and anchored in the heart of the Costa Tropical of Granada, is situated on a beautiful hill, from which incomparable views of the sea, Vega de Motril and Salobreña can be seen.

The lounges, spacious and with fireplaces, are the ideal places for conversation and reading. The presence of music envelops the atmosphere in a pleasant and peaceful way. Various familiar objects are integrated into the decoration, giving the place a very personal style. A splendid viewpoint terrace, outside and in the middle of nature, is the ideal setting to enjoy tasty breakfasts and savor the tropical fruits of our orchard under the magical light of Andalusia.

It was an important farmhouse in Muslim times and had a citadel and a wall to protect the people. There was a large house called ¨la aduana¨, a sugar factory and a pool for cooking flax. Next to the entrance was the Beas or Bates mill. What remains are the remains of the wall that protected the old farmhouse, the tower called Torre de Bates and a cube of the wall. The subway aqueduct that crosses the farm originally carried water from the irrigation ditch to the sugar customs house. It may have had about thirty houses, a small mosque, a sugar factory, a flax factory, a flour mill, a strong house or alcazaba, wine presses, warehouses, etc.

After the conquest of Granada, the rich lands of Bates el Viejo were bought by Francisco Ramírez de Madrid, Royal Secretary, Captain of Artillery and Count of Bornos. For several centuries his descendants were the owners of the Bates.

At the end of the 18th century the Jiménez Caballero family acquired the property and built a mansion and a botanical garden, some of whose plants were brought by General Hernández de Velasco, hero of the Cuban War and good friend of the family. In 1898 José Jiménez Caballero, mayor of Motril and member of the Spanish Parliament, built a colonial mansion, the only building still standing today, whose ironwork is said to have been bought from Gustave Eiffel (although the latter is not documented) and created a romantic Italian garden for his guests (Jardín de la Luna or Jardín de Invierno), connecting both gardens by a large travertine marble staircase flanked by coral grottoes. Among his distinguished guests are different personalities of the political and social world throughout the twentieth century.
